Beach Head can be considered one of the classic fortress defence games still in existence. Although initially released in 2002, this platform is now available for download on most Windows operating systems. Although some feel that this game can be criticised for its lack of innovation and a rather static invasion scenario, it is still perfect for those who want to pass a bit of time or who are interested in action-packed military scenarios.
The Premise
The actual plot of Beach Head is quite simple. The player must endeavour to defend his or her bunker against hordes of enemy troops that are disembarking on the coastline. From basic soldiers to advanced infantry divisions, helicopters and armoured personnel carriers, the difficulty of the game will increase as one progresses through different levels. This is enhanced by the fact that there is only a limited amount of ammunition available. As troops will arrive from different directions, the challenge tends to be avoiding a complete collapse as opposed to eliminating all of the targets. Unfortunately, these situations will become quite repetitive over time. There is no real way to win the game; more and more enemies will simply land along the beach. The only achievable objective is to beat one's previous record.

Sound Effects and Weapons Choices
For a game released in 2002, the sound effects are seen as adequate. Helicopters flying overhead, the sound of shells hitting the bunker and the occasional ricochet are a few of the surprises to expect during game play. Throughout the levels, the player is provided with specific weapons. While one scenario may require missiles or mortars, an evening attack might only allow the player to have a few flares and rounds of ammunition. This is where the difficulty (and frustration) can certainly mount. Some will grow tired of the inability to ever gain a real advantage and while the weapons and sounds may vary slightly, the truth of the matter is that much like the overall premise, these variants can get old rather quickly.
Classic Shooter
Although there is no doubt that Beach Head is repetitive in its nature, many players will still enjoy a platform that involves less strategy and more action. We should also mention here that this game is no walk in the park. Being so very difficult, those who prefer a nearly insurmountable challenge are likely to become very addicted. When the plot becomes too tough, there are built-in cheat codes that supply endless ammunition and unlimited levels of armour. So, these options could very well be the 'holy grail' for those who have lost the stomach to repel such relentless onslaughts.
System Requirements
Beach Head 2002 is designed to be used with Windows operating systems from Windows 95 to Windows NT. Like other first-person shooter platforms, it is best to utilise Direct X 9.0 for proper graphical rendering. It is 29.6 megabytes in size, so a relatively small amount of memory will be required.
The Final Judgement
Although Beach Head may not be as appealing as other games that provide more interesting stories, this classic 'shoot 'em up' platform still attracts a fair amount of fans. Once again, let us list a few of the positive and negative attributes regarding Beach Head 2002.
Pros
- Simplistic game play
- Reasonably good graphics and sound effects
- The possibility to enter in cheat codes
Cons
- Impossible to beat the game
- A lack of weapons
- Repetitive action

Beach Head 2000 is a first-person shooter game developed by Digital Fusion. It was originally released by WizardWorks for Microsoft Windows and MacSoft for Mac OS as a 'value-priced' release. A loose remake of the 1983 computer game Beach Head, it shared a similar premise, as players defend a beach against attack by utilizing a variety of weapons. A version of the game was also produced for video arcades by Tsunami Visual Technologies, available in various motion simulationcabinets[1] and Digital Fusion continues to sell the Windows version as a download via its website.
Gameplay[edit]
Players must defend the beach from a variety of threats both on the ground and in the air.
Players take the role of the sole gunner defending a beach against invading enemy soldiers, tanks, helicopters and other military attack vehicles. The player utilizes a variety of weapons, including a gun turret with a machine gun, howitzer cannon and guided surface-to-air missiles. A handgun is available as a final means of defense. The mouse is used to aim. Additional ammo and health are available by shooting packages dropped with parachutes.[2] Missions end when all enemies are defeated, each mission changes the spawn point of enemies on the beach. There are infinite missions and the game has no ending.[3]

The game was met with mostly negative reviews, with much of the criticism centered around its gameplay. GameSpot said 'The game grows old quickly, as taking out the stream of enemies in each level becomes repetitive.'[2] A review in Allgame said that 'the initial appeal of Beach Head 2000's single view wears off very quickly' and compared it unfavorably to the original Beach Head.[3]Inside Mac Games commented that the game was not worth the relatively low price, even among a limited selection of Mac OS games.[7] However, IGN had a more positive reaction to the game, comparing it to Missile Command and calling it 'strangely addicting.'[6]
